We all have a natural desire to learn. No matter what our motivation is, we strive to learn and improve in what we aspire to do. Often, we learn by doing – through experiences and through making mistakes. However, this isn’t always effective or feasible. Many situations require basic knowledge and have little room for mistakes from the start. For these situations we use academic and/or theory-based lecture trainings.
The international regulations for preventing collisions at sea are table stakes essential knowledge needed by all Navigational Officers. Experiences, from the past have shown difficulty in engaging personnel with these (basic) rulesets. InThere and Columbia Ship Management provide a training suite for education of the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. At the core, this will include transforming 17 learning goals into tailor made serious game missions.
SERIOUS GAMING
For the users it is an engaging and easy-to-use format and management can monitor outcomes. In time, new and improved content can be added. These first 17 missions of the serious games include:
• Navigation: The player will see a real time scenario and must make decisions and observations.
• Bridge decisions: The player will see a ship’s bridge. Outside (through the window) ships will move, and the player must make decisions based on the different scenarios.
• Lights: The player will see vessels and must identify appropriate lights combinations.
• Radar navigation: The player will see a radar screen and needs to navigate based on the radar images.
• Buoys: the player will learn the rules for the IALA maritime buoy system
